First Family Concert was a hit with parent and kids
The Folsom Lake Symphony’s first concert geared to families was a huge success, judging by the smiles and participation of the kids. This performance, Family Concert: Connections@Symphony, October 3, 2015 at Harris Center, was made possible by the generous sponsors and attendees of our annual benefit gala, “An Evening Under the Stars.” With affordable pricing, the program reached out to community members who were not familiar with symphonic music. Sponsorships were also made available to underserved communities.
More than 530 people, filling the Harris Center main floor, listened to an hour of specially selected classical music followed by an “instrument petting zoo,” during which youngsters could try out orchestra instruments. Maestro Peter Jaffe related each selection of the repertoire to a school subject – literature for Prokofiev’s “Montagues and Capulets” and geography for Barosso’s “Brazil (Aquarela do Brasil),” for example.
During the “petting zoo,” the kids eagerly gathered around the various musicians to hear and learn about instruments of all types and to try to play them.
The Family Concert turned out to be the perfect introduction to both classical music and the experience of an elegant concert hall.
