The Folsom Lake Symphony and Peter Jaffe, Music Director and Conductor, take the stage at the Harris Center, welcoming you to the new year of beautiful music. Come, be a part, and join us for our much anticipated Valentine’s concert… Romantic Tales!
First up, selections from George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. The composer describes his work as a “a folk opera”, and it has become an American favorite – one of the best known and most frequently performed American operas since its opening in 1935.
Next, Camille Saint-Saëns Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, op. 22 with guest artist Tien Hsieh. Berlioz described Saint-Saëns as “an absolutely shattering master pianist,” and his compositions are extraordinary and exquisite, and considered highly influential in his time. The Folsom Lake Symphony is excited to welcome Tien Hsieh to the stage for her premier engagement with us.
And finally, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade will fill the program with adventure, beauty, and evocative themes that will sweep the audience away into romance and wonder. In the composer’s own words, Scheherazade is “an orchestral suite…representing, as it were, a kaleidoscope of fairy-tale images.”
Born in Taiwan, Tien Hsieh has enjoyed a far-ranging career as recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician, with recital appearances in Hungary, Germany, Italy, France, Canada, China, and throughout the U.S.
Her various accolades include the Los Angeles International Liszt Competition, Li-Ching Cultural & Educational Foundation Grant, Distinguished Artist Award from Artists International Presentations, cover feature on Sacramento Talent Magazine, and recital selected by The San Francisco Examiner’s Memorable Concerts of 2013. She has been heard on radio stations across the U.S. and Canada, and her television appearances include PBS for the International Piano Festival in Houston, Texas, and a nationwide TV commercial for Van de Kamp fish sticks!
Tien’s 2014 Liszt recital tour included a return to both the Liszt Museum in Budapest and Lane Series at University of Vermont, Boston University, recital debut in Pécs, Hungary, and the opening concert at Albano Liszt Festival in Italy. As soloist, she has performed with Roswell Symphony in New Mexico, Spokane Symphony, Manhattan Philharmonia, and Houston Civic Orchestra, among others.
Tien’s recent recording of Bach & Beethoven: Mostly Transcriptions 2 on the MSR label received high praise from the press, reaching #1 twice on Amazon’s Best Sellers list, and remained a best seller for two consecutive months in 2015.
“Hsieh plays with grace and energy. She has a keen ear for the music’s architecture, and makes the piano sing in every register.”
