The Folsom Lake Symphony and Peter Jaffe, Music Director and Conductor, present a performance full of exquisite music, capturing the essence of the joy and energy of new life at its fullest.

Entering into the evening, “Spanish Dance No.1” from Falla’s La vida breve (the short life), one of the most popular pieces from the opera, is sure to take the audience to a place of grand excitement as it depicts the celebration of the betrothal of Paco to Carmela, full of the sounds and rhythms of Spanish dance.

In Beethoven’s “Triple Concerto in C Major, op. 56,” the symphony will next provide a canvas for guest artists Nigel Armstrong, violin, James Jaffee, cello, and Elizabeth Dorman, piano as they take the stage to perform this ever-popular piece. The only concerto that Beethoven ever completed for more than one instrument, the audience will find the presence of gracious pomp, aristocratic polonaise, and bolero. The Folsom Lake Symphony is excited to welcome our guest artists this evening!

Finally, Stravinsky’s Petrushka will carry the listener away on an adventure reflected in what the composer of the ballet describes in this way: “in composing the music, I had in my mind a distinct picture of a puppet, suddenly endowed with life, exasperating the patience of the orchestra with diabolical cascades of arpeggios. The orchestra in turn retaliates with menacing trumpet blasts.” Originally conceived as a concert work, the theatrical nature of the music lended itself immediately to the stage and ballet. This evening, the symphony presents the 1947 version of the piece, revised by Stravinsky with dedicated contrabassoon and additional trumpet.

Guest artist Nigel Armstrong is emerging as a dynamic and creative artist both within and beyond the realm of classical music. From his musical beginnings as a member of “The Little Fiddlers” in Sonoma, CA to collaborations with tango musicians in Argentina he’s enjoyed using the violin in a versatile manner throughout his life.

As soloist Nigel has performed with orchestras such as the Dusseldorf Symphony, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, YOA Orchestra of the Americas, the Pacific Symphony, and the Boston Pops, and with conductors including Sir Neville Marriner, Carlos Miguel Prieto, and Carl St. Clair. He received the 2nd Prize, the Ole Bull Prize, and the Nordheim Award at the 2010 Menuhin Competition Senior Division in Oslo, Norway, and got the 4th Prize plus the Commissioned Work Prize at the XIV International Tchaikovsky Competition. As a chamber musician his concerts have taken him across the US and abroad–highlights have included opportunities to share the stage with the Tokyo String Quartet and pianist Jonathan Biss.

A graduate of the Colburn School and the Curtis Institute of Music, Nigel’s teachers have included Arnold Steinhardt, Shmuel Ashkenasi, Robert Lipsett, Zaven Melikian, Li Lin, and Donald Weilerstein, among others.

James Jaffe

Cellist James Jaffe connects through music with composers, colleagues, and audiences. He has performed solos with CityMusic Cleveland, the National Repertory Orchestra, and the Stockton Symphony. Recent chamber music appearances have taken him to the Trinity Alps Chamber Music Festival, through Switzerland and France on concert tours, to the Robert Mann String Quartet Seminar in Manhattan, to Beijing’s Central Conservatory of Music, and frequently to Groupmuses in San Francisco, including a sold-out performance of Schubert’s Death and the Maiden at San Francisco’s first Massivemuse. He also serves as Director of Festival Rolland, a new summer chamber music festival in Burgundy, France.

An enthusiastic interpreter of new music, James has collaborated with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Steven Stucky, given a series of performances of Khse Buon by Cambodian-American composer Chinary Ung, and presented the premiere of Peregrinations for Solo Cello by San Francisco composer Kyle Randall. He is also a member and frequent section leader of One Found Sound, San Francisco’s unconducted chamber orchestra. His performances have been broadcast by Cleveland’s WCLV 104.9, Virginia’s WVTF 89.1, San Francisco’s KDFC 90.3, and streamed live from the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival.

James has studied the cello with Milly Rosner, Richard Aaron, Stephen Geber, and Jennifer Culp, earning performance degrees from the University of Michigan, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He has spent summers at the Aspen Music Festival, Music@Menlo, and the Banff Centre in Canada. His chamber music mentors include members of the Juilliard, Cleveland, Takács, Tokyo, Vermeer, Emerson, Brentano, Kronos, Cavani, and Concord Quartets.

Passionate about sharing music with the next generation, James has served as director of high school chamber ensembles at Baldwin Wallace University and mentored students through the Detroit Symphony’s Civic Youth Ensembles program. He currently conducts the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra’s Preparatory Orchestra and coaches chamber ensembles at the Crowden Music Center in Berkeley.

Elizabeth Dorman

Elizabeth Dorman, piano. Praised by Joshua Kosman of the San Francisco Chronicle for her “crisp, brightly finished” playing and her “elegance and verve,” pianist Elizabeth Dorman received the 2017 Father Merlet Award from Pro Musicis and was a finalist in the 2018 Leipzig International Bach Competition.  Appearances in the 2018-2019 season include Bach’s concerto in D minor BWV 1052 with the Leipzig Chamber Orchestra, solo recitals in Washington, California, and New York, chamber music performances with principal players from the Los Angeles and New York Philharmonics, and with members of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and as a featured pianist with the Louisville Orchestra for Saint-Säens’s Carnival of the Animals.  Upcoming recording projects include an album of Scarlatti sonatas, anticipated for release in Fall 2019.

Elizabeth performs frequently as a soloist and chamber musician and is a member of New York’s Bridge Arts Ensemble. She was an Artist in Residence at the Banff Centre and has also appeared at summer festivals including Tanglewood, Sarasota, Aspen, Toronto, Icicle Creek, and her live performances have been nationally broadcast on public radio. Ms. Dorman has appeared as a soloist with orchestra in San Francisco’s Davies Symphony Hall, Stanford’s Bing Concert Hall, Leipzig’s Hochschule für Musik, Walnut Creek’s Lesher Center for the Arts, San Francisco’s Herbst Theater, and at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Elizabeth was also winner of the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition, the Ross McKee competition, and the California Young Artist’s Beethoven Competition.

Currently based in New York City, Elizabeth is a doctoral candidate of Gilbert Kalish at Stony Brook University, where she also serves as Adjunct Lecturer of Piano Pedagogy. For three years, Elizabeth served as Mr. Kalish’s Head Teaching Assistant.  A passionate educator, she has previously held teaching positions at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Preparatory Division and has been piano faculty at summer festivals including the Icicle Creek Music Center and Summer Music West at the San Francisco Conservatory.  She has participated in masterclasses with Robert Levin, Robert McDonald, Leon Fleisher, Wu Han, Arthur Haas, John Perry, Menahem Pressler, and Ann Schein.  A native of San Francisco, CA, Elizabeth began her training with Paul Hersh at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
