The Folsom Lake Symphony was one of five winners of the 2019 Big Day of Giving photo contest. The winning photo, “The Stage” was taken by Kari Bluff, a parent of the boy pictured in the photo. The wonderful description was written by Afton Tuveson, a long time symphony patron and volunteer.
Talk about front and center! Three year old Søren had one of the best seats in the house at Harris Center for the Arts at Folsom Lake College, when he attended Folsom Lake Symphony’s Family Concert, “Dancin’ in Your Seat” on March 30, 2019. Just imagine what he was thinking; how his world had opened up to all the possibilities and joy that music could bring to his life! Then imagine him playing the cello or the trombone, because that’s exactly what he did following the concert in the popular “Instrument Petting Zoo,” where symphony musicians gave children the opportunity to dream big with hands-on opportunities trying out different musical instruments. Truth be told, Søren’s favorite part of the concert was the Instrument Petting Zoo,” He was so excited that “the cello was just the right size for me!”
For the past three years, funds provided by donations of the Big Day of Giving have made it possible for the Folsom Lake Symphony to continue to offer this low-cost admission concert for Sacramento-area families. Because of Big Day of Giving’s support, approximately 200 of those tickets are given out as scholarships to children who might never have a symphony experience or the opportunity to try and play a musical instrument. Each year, Music Director and Conductor, Peter Jaffe and his musicians, generously take the audience on a musical adventure designed to entertain, educate and hopefully inspire a next generation of music lovers, music-makers and concertgoers!
