The Folsom Lake Symphony and Peter Jaffe, Music Director and Conductor, return to the stage at the Harris Center, opening the 2018-2019 season with a Brilliant triple treat: Bernstein, Bruch and Brahms!
Join us for Leonard Bernstein’s Overture to Candide. The voices of every instrument of the orchestra will be on point throughout this exciting piece, as the composer weaves together one prominent tune from the opera with the next, and ultimately presents a theme heard only in the overture. We’ll find human passion and fanfare at its best.
Sojourn with us further, into Max Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy, Op. 46, featuring violinist Kerson Leong. The piece moves from a nostalgic adagio with reflections of bagpipe drones, to lovely and enchanting andantes and dances, and finally to a vivacious and spectacular finale, allegro guerriero (war-like). It all demands exquisite virtuosity from the violin soloist, which we will experience from beginning to end.
Settle in, finally, for a symphony written over a summer holiday, with Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 73. The feeling is pastoral, idyllic, with the grandeur, variations, melodies, and triumph synonymous with Brahms. Performed by the Folsom Lake Symphony.
Kerson Leong returns to perform Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy with the Folsom Lake Symphony after his exciting and passionate April 2016 performance of the Khachaturian Violin Concerto in D minor, in his American solo debut. Mr. Leong made his Carnegie Hall debut giving the North America debut of John Rutter’s latest work, “Visions.” (May 2018)
Currently Artist-in-Residence with the Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal under Yannick Nezet-Seguin for the 2018-2019 season, Mr. Leong enjoys a prolific schedule as a soloist as well as that of an avid chamber musician, performing internationally. He has appeared with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Oslo Philharmonic, Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National de Lorraine, Kansai Philharmonic Orchestra, the Toronto, Montreal and Quebec Symphony Orchestras, among others. In May of 2018 Mr. Leong performed at Carnegie Hall, rendering the North American debut of John Rutter’s latest work, “Visions.”
Acclaimed by fellow musicians and audiences alike for his commanding stage presence, magnificent tone, and musical integrity, Kerson Leong has been called “Canada’s next great violinist” and is quickly establishing himself as one of the foremost musicians of his generation. He performs on a 1741 Guarneri del Gesu courtesy of Canimex Inc, Drummondville (Quebec), Canada.
Come and join the audience for our much anticipated 2018-2019 season opening performance, and be a part of the BRILLIANCE that is the Folsom Lake Symphony!
